Assistant Minister Meeting

Shelter WA was pleased to attend a meeting with Minister Howarth MP, Assistant Minister for Community Housing, Homelessness and Community Services, WA based Aboriginal Community Housing Organisations and the Telethon Kids Institute Ngulluk Koolunga Ngulluk Koort (Our Children, Our Heart) Project to discuss a range of housing and homelessness issues.

The poor health, safety, educational and cultural impacts of living in overcrowded homes, and solutions to end overcrossing including the critical need for Aboriginal people to lead the design, development and management of housing that meets family needs, was discussed. 

The important role of the Aboriginal Community Housing sector in providing homes and positive outcomes for Aboriginal people was highlighted.

Also discussed was public housing maintenance and the ways in which maintenance contracts could facilitate Aboriginal training, employment and businesses opportunities in regional WA. The critical need for long term, co-investment by the Commonwealth and State Government was raised with the Minister. Shelter WA looks forward to ongoing discussions with the Minister.
