Negative gearing and Capital Gains Tax reform needed

Once again negative gearing has hit the headlines, with the Government and Opposition again turning the subject into a political issue.

Shelter WA and National Shelter have been advocating for changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax over recent years.

“All the evidence suggests that if Australia is serious about tackling housing affordability, we must scale back negative gearing and reduce the capital gains tax concessions," Shelter WA spokesperson Stephen Hall said.

“Modelling shows 75% of the benefits of negative gearing go to the top income earners, not low-income earners.

“The increase in revenue gained from reforming these tax settings can be channeled into new social and affordable housing.”
